Of late, scholars have increasingly called into question the utility of the nation-state as the default category for the study of Buddhism. Richard K. Payne, Editor-in-Chief of Oxford Bibliographies in Buddhism, argues that categories have lexical and rhetorical consequences, and should only be used when theoretically relevant.
